Alfonso
Cuarón and Naomi Klein Shock Toronto and Venice
The
film based on Naomi Klein's ("No Logo") bestseller
The Shock Doctrine is primed for simultaneous debuts
at both the Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film
Festival.
Story
continues below.
Originally
created to be an online companion to Klein's "The Shock
Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism," it is believed
it is the first online film to be chosen to screen at both
festivals. Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men)
and Jonás Cuarón direct.
Klein
said in a press release, "The central idea of my book,
"The Shock Doctrine", is the use of shocks to exploit
people, whether individuals in torture cells or entire societies
after disasters. That is such a visual, physical idea that
I knew that a true artist could find ways to take the argument
and reach people on the visceral level of film. I sent the
book to Alfonso because I felt that the future he created
for Children of Men was very close to the present I
was seeing in disaster zones. I was hoping he would send me
a quote for the book jacket and instead he pulled together
this amazing team of artists to make The Shock Doctrine
short film. It was one of those blessed projects where everything
felt fated."
The
Shock Doctrine
will screen at TIFF on September 7th and 9th, and at the Venice
Film Festival on September 7th and 8th and will be released
online on September 7th (see the YouTube feed below).
